biog:
Originally from Stockport where I played with rock bands (Incisor) but had started to listen to Keith Jarrett, Jan Garbarek, all things ECM, fusion, Osibisa, Santana and John Coltrane and spent many a night at the Band on The Wall in Manchester. I moved to Birmingham to study Pharmacy after leaving school. The subject of Pharmacy is for another day, but musically, at the Aston Centre for the Arts, I was exposed to everything from “improvising with found objects” to bebop. A formative time!
I moved to London from Birmingham in 1980, studied with Jimmy Hastings, Andy Macintosh and Don Rendell, and practised as much as a day job would allow. After a mix of day job and gigging I took the Guildhall post-graduate Jazz Course (LGSM) in 1989, studying with Jean Toussaint, Stan Sulzmann. Simon Purcell, Pete Churchill, and Trevor Tomkins. I performed with Randy Brecker and the Guildhall Big Band at Ronnie Scott's and The Stables, Wavendon. Other students were just as inspiring as the teachers - Gareth Williams (p, guit), Arnie Somogyi (bs), Mike Williams (as), Markku Rinta-Pollari (saxes, guit).
Since Guildhall days I’ve been gigging around town and abroad with Territory, Forty Feet Forward, Midnight Blue, The Soul Agents, the Markku Rinta-Pollari Band, the Roger Humbles Quartet and various combinations of musicians from duos up to big bands, composing, and travelling the jazz journey!
